What is Level 2 EV Charger?

A Level 2 EV charger delivers an electrical current from an outlet or hardwired unit to the vehicle via the connector, similar to a standard-issue ev charger.

Level 2 ev charger need a 208-240 Volt, 16Amp or 32Amp circuit, Which is a charger that provides faster charging times for electric vehicles than a standard outlet. It uses a higher voltage and amperage to provide power to the electric vehicle, which can provide a full charge in much less time. Level 2 ev chargers are typically installed in businesses or public areas where electric vehicles can be parked for an extended period of time or Carried with the vehicle.

Whats the difference of level 1 or level 2 ev charger?

Level 1:

Level 1 ev charger represents 120-volt charging using the ubiquitous household outlet. It’s known as trickle charging because it typically provides 3-5 miles of range for every hour it’s connected to an EV or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). Modern PHEVs are EPA-rated with 15-60 miles of electric range, while EVs are between 150-400 miles, so that could mean 30 hours to replenish 150 miles of range at Level 1’s fastest. The amount depends mostly on the vehicle’s efficiency, because a less efficient vehicle gets less range from the same amount of electricity as a more efficient one.

Automakers almost always include with their plug-in vehicles a small Level 1 charger, a small box or cylinder with a short cord, and grounded household plug on one end and a longer cord and the pistol-grip connector that plugs into the car on the other. It’s technically called an EVSE, which stands for electric vehicle service equipment or supply equipment. While it’s the least useful charging level, Level 1 manages to be the most useful designation because there’s little difference in how much juice any of these chargers provide. Typically they’re limited to 10 or 12 amperes of current because there’s an assumption they’ll be used on a 15- or 20-amp circuit along with other electric outlets and, thus, other appliances. Ten versus 12 amps is a difference, but a trickle is still a trickle. You’ll see in the Level 2 description how meaningless a level can be.

Level 2:

Level 2 ev charger is the opposite of Level 1: the most useful type of charging and the least meaningful designation. Level 2 EV Charger are the most useful because it’s the fastest means of charging an EV at home.

The only thing Level 2 ev charger means is 240 volts, which your house already receives for appliances like a clothes dryer, electric oven or central air conditioner whether you use these items or not. Unfortunately, voltage is just one factor behind the power that charges a battery; current is the second factor, and the amount of current supported by Level 2 extends from 12 to 32 amps. So charging with this Level 2 for one hour could mean you’ve added 5.5 miles of range or 60 miles of range, which all depends on the vehicle and the charging unit.

The Level 2 ev charger can have a rating of 12, 16, 20, 24, 32, 40 amps — and some can be set to throttle down to lower current levels to accommodate being fed by less robust circuits.

How long time one level 2 ev charger need to full charge my car?

A Level 2 EV charger can charge an electric vehicle up to 10 times faster than a Level 1charger. To calculate the charging time of a level 2 EV charger, you need to know the wattage of the charger and the the battery size.

Battery Size: Which EV is being charged? Electric vehicles are equipped with various battery pack sizes which determine the amount of energy stored in the vehicle.

Power of Station and Acceptance Rate: Electric vehicles have a variety of power acceptance rates and charging stations have various max power delivery ratings. If the EVSE offers less power than the vehicle’s maximum acceptance rate, the EVSE is the limiting factor in charge time. If the vehicle’s acceptance rate is lower than the EVSE’s maximum output rate, the vehicle is the limiting factor.

How many miles per hour does a home charger add?

  1. A standard schuko plug (up to 3kw) – this will add about 10 miles per hour. It’s useful to have a three-pin charging cable as a backup charging option, but they are much slower than a dedicated home charger.
  2. A dedicated home charger (7.4kw) – the typical home charge point will add about 30 miles per hour. A 7.4kW charger is our recommendation – this is more than fast enough for most drivers as you will usually “top up” your battery for a few hours overnight.
  3. A dedicated three-phase home charger (up to 22kw) – a three-phase home charger is capable of adding around 50-60 miles an hour, but most residential properties cannot support these chargers and most EV drivers won’t really benefit from them.

Then The charging time for a Level 2 EV charger can be calculated by using the following equation: Charging Time (in hours) = Battery Capacity (in kWh) / Charging Rate (in kW).

Finally, Here are some general car brand battery capacity and amp hours for your reference:

How long will my electric car take to charge with one level 2 ev charger?

If you still want to work out how long your EV will take to charge from empty to full, then you can do it with this simple calculation:

Eg: estimated charge times at 16 AMP on 220 Volt Circuit (3.3 kWh charge rate):

Each electric vehicle will charge at different speeds according to its on-board charger, while the amount of charging time will depend on the size of the battery as well as the charging speed. For example an EV with a larger 64kWh battery will normally take longer to charge from zero to full compared to a 32kWh battery simply because it is bigger.

This is why charging an electric car doesn’t take as long as you think. If you were to charge an electric car from completely empty to full, then it’s true it would take a long time in many cases. But this will hardly ever happen, if at all.

Think about how you charge your mobile phone. You probably plug it in overnight when it still has plenty of charge left. When you wake up, it is full again and you continue to use it as normal. But did you think about how long it took to charge fully while you were sleeping? We’d guess not!

Charging an electric car is extremely similar. Most of the time you will top up the battery overnight to recoup the miles you used during the day. Occasionally you will drive a bit further, so you’ll need to charge a bit more or you’ll need to charge during the day once in a while. But most of the time you won’t think about it – it will become habit to plug in your car at night, charge it up a little, and wake up to a full battery.

How to choose Level 2 EV Charger?

First, You should know clearly if your car is suitable for Type 1 or type 2 and How to judge.

Type 1 plug

Type 1 plugs are single-phase standard plugs for electric vehicles in the Americas. It allows you to charge your car with a charging power level of up to 7.4 kW, which is one side of the level 2 EV Charger.

Suitable for American car, Japanese car , such as Chevrolet, Ford, Nissan etc.

type 1

Type 2 plug

Type 2 plugs are three-phase plugs and considered as the standard model. Powered by three extra wires, it keeps your vehicle running faster. In private spaces, charging power levels of up to 22 kW are common, while public charging stations have charging power levels of up to 43 kW. Most public charging stations are equipped with Type 2 sockets. All Mode 3 charging cables can be used, and electric vehicles can be charged using Type 1 and Type 2 plugs, Which is one side of the level 2 EV Charge,  Suitable for European car  such as Audi, BMW, Benz etc
